O National Institute for OCCUPATIONAL
SAFETY and Health Information The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Information Inquiry Service is a toll-free technical information service that provides convenient public access to NIOSH and its information resources. The service is available to anyone in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. Clearinghouse The National Oral Health Information Clearinghouse (NOHIC) focuses on general oral health as well as the information needs of special care patients, including people with generic or systemic disorders that compromise oral health, whose medical treatments cause oral problems, or whose mental or physical disabilities complicate oral hygiene or treatment. NOHIC develops and distributes information and educational materials on special care topics, maintains a bibliographic database on oral health information and materials, and provides information services with trained staff to respond to specific interests and questions. BONE DISEASES~National Resource Center The NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases~National Resource Center (ORBD~NRC) provides patients, health professionals, and the public with an important link to resources and information on metabolic bone diseases. The mission of NIH ORBD~NRC is to expand awareness and enhance knowledge and understanding of the prevention, early detection, and treatment of these diseases as well as strategies for coping with them. The NIH ORBD~NRC is supported by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases with contributions from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, DHHS Office on Women’s Health, and National Institute on Aging. Center The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) provides objective, science-based information about a wide variety of pesticide-related subjects, including: pesticide product information; information on the recognition and management of pesticide poisonings, toxicology, environmental chemistry, referrals for laboratory analyses, investigation of pesticide incidents, emergency treatment information, safety information, health and environmental effects, and clean-up and disposal procedures. NPIC is a cooperative effort between Oregon State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Network The CDC National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) is the U.S. reference, referral, and distribution service for information on HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). NPIN produces, collects, catalogs, processes, stocks, and disseminates materials and information on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB to organizations and people working in those disease fields in international, national, state, and local settings. All NPIN services are designed to facilitate sharing of information and resources on education and prevention services, published materials, research findings, and trends among users. Hours of operation: 9:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., Monday–Friday (Eastern time). POLICY Information Center The Policy Information Center (PIC) is a centralized repository of evaluations, short-term evaluative research reports and program inspections/audits relevant to the department's operations, programs, and policies. It includes relevant reports from the General Accounting Office, the Congressional Budget Office, and the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council's Committee on National Statistics, both part of the National Academy of Sciences. Reports are also available from the Departments of Agriculture, Labor, and Education, as well as the private sector. Final reports and executive summaries are available for review at the facility, or final reports may be purchased from the National Technical Information Service. In addition, the PIC online database of evaluation abstracts is accessible through the ASPE Web site, http://aspe.hhs.gov. The database includes more than 8,000 project descriptions of both in-process and completed studies. ASPE Highlighter, a quarterly publication, features articles of recently completed studies. The Office of Population Affairs Clearinghouse provides information and distributes publications to health professionals and the public in the areas of family planning, adolescent pregnancy, and adoption. The National Quality Measures Clearinghouse™, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is a public repository for evidence-based quality measures and measure sets. Center The National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC) is a library and information center on disability and rehabilitation. Funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, NARIC collects and disseminates the results of federally funded research projects. The collection, which also includes books, journal articles, and audiovisuals, grows at a rate of about 300 documents per month. The Rural Assistance Center (RAC) serves as a rural health and human services information portal which helps rural communities and other rural stakeholders access the full range of available programs, funding, and research that can enable them to provide quality health and human services to rural residents. The Rural Information Center (RIC) provides information and funding sources to tribal, local, state, and Federal Government officials; community organizations; rural electric and telephone cooperatives; libraries; businesses; and rural citizens working to maintain the vitality of America’s rural areas. Center Sponsored by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, the resource center provides information and educational materials on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), apnea, and other related topics. It responds to information requests from parents, professionals, and the public. The resource center maintains a library/database of public awareness and medical research materials on SIDS and related topics and conducts customized searches of this database and MEDLINE in response to users’ requests. It maintains and updates mailing lists of State programs, groups, and individuals concerned with SIDS and also develops factsheets, catalogs, and bibliographies on topics of special interest to the SIDS community. Research The National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NCSDR) promotes basic, clinical, and applied research on sleep and sleep disorders by strengthening existing sleep research programs, training new investigators, and creating new programs to address important gaps and identify opportunities in sleep and sleep disorders. NCSDR sponsors workshops and conferences, and develops written and web-based resources to educate health care professionals and the general public about sleep disorders, sleep-related research findings, and sleep-related public health. The Office on Smoking and Health develops and distributes the annual Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health, coordinates a national public information and education program on tobacco use and health, and coordinates tobacco education and research efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services and throughout both Federal and State governments. It maintains the Smoking and Health database, consisting of approximately 60,000 records available on CD-ROM (CDP File) through the Government Printing Office (Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402). The office provides information on smoking cessation, environmental tobacco smoke/passive smoking, pregnancy/infants, professional/technical information, and a publications list upon request. Service The National Technical Information Service is the Federal Government’s central source for the sale of scientific, technical, engineering, and related business information produced by or for the U.S. Government and complementary material from international sources. NTIS also offers thousands of multimedia, training, and educational programs produced by Federal agencies. Approximately 3 million products are available from NTIS in a variety of formats: electronic download, online access, computer products, multimedia, microfiche and paper. The Weight-Control Information Network (WIN) was established by the National Institutes of Health's (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in June 1994. WIN is a national source of information on weight control, obesity, and weight-related nutritional disorders for health professionals and the public. WIN responds to both written and telephone requests for information and referrals, and provides a variety of written materials on obesity, weight control, and nutritional disorders. Publications distributed by WIN are indexed on the Combined Health Information Database (CHID), available on the Web at http://chid.nih.gov. Access is free of charge. Center The National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC) is a health information and Federal publication referral service that provides a gateway to women's health information from other government agencies, public and private organizations, and consumer and health care professional groups. Resource Center The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center (NYVPRC) is a central source of information on prevention and intervention programs, publications, research, and statistics on violence committed by and against children and teens. The resource center is a collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Federal Working Group on Youth Violence, which includes representatives from the Departments of Health and Human Services, Departments of Agriculture, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, and Justice, and the Health Resources and Services Administration, HHS.
