The AHEPA Cooley's Anemia Foundation was established by the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) to provide services to those afflicted with thalassemia (Cooley's anemia), to provide public and professional education about this hereditary disease, and to provide research grants to help find a cure. Cooley's anemia is an inherited blood disorder which usually afflicts persons of Mediterranean ancestry. The Foundation sponsors testing and screening programs for persons of Greek descent and provides medical evaluations of the test results. Grants are made to researchers in the fields of hematology, biochemistry, and related sciences to increase understanding of Cooley's anemia and to help find a cure for it. The Foundation maintains a listing of major treatment and counseling centers in the United States.
Publications
The Foundation publishes pamphlets about Cooley's anemia. One pamphlet is available in Greek. The Foundation has also prepared a television public service announcement. Reports of its funded research projects are published in research journals and in publications of the Order of Ahepa and the Foundation.
