This center supports the rigorous scientific evaluation of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments for addictions and their health and psychological complications. Several projects are underway, including: preclinical trials of an herbal compound formulated to help prevent alcoholic relapse; preclinical trials of electroacupuncture to map the neural substrates of opioid dependence; and a clinical trial of an herbal compound for the treatment of hepatitis-C symptoms. A training program for predoctoral, postdoctoral and faculty scientists and/or CAM practitioners has been established, and materials are available to researchers and practitioners for guidance in research design and grant applications.
