2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Request for Public Comment (updated May 2014)

The 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) is requesting written public comments (submitted through the Public Comments Database at www.DietaryGuidelines.gov) throughout their work. The Committee is very appreciative of the many comments received so far. To assist the Committee, it is providing the following guidance to the public:

Length and Timing of Public Comments

  • Provide a brief summary (approx. 250 words) of the points or issues in the comment text box.
  • If providing literature or other resources, one of the following forms is preferred:
    • Complete citation, as in a bibliographic entry
    • Abstract
    • Electronic link to full article or report
  • Provide comments as early as possible in the Committee’s process to increase the opportunity for meaningful impact. A deadline for comment submission prior to each public meeting will no longer be used.

Subcommittee (SC) Requests for Public Comments

Although the public may submit comments on any topic, the Committee would find comments in the areas below particularly useful. This document may be updated periodically and will remain available, as relevant, at the public comments database web site.

When submitting your written comments, it would be useful to include the request number below (e.g., “Request 5-2”) in the comment text box, which is searchable. In addition, select the appropriate Topic Area as noted below.

SC 1: Food and Nutrient Intakes, and Health: Current Status and Trends
No specific requests at this time.

SC 2: Dietary Patterns, Foods and Nutrients, and Health Outcomes

Request 2-1 - SC 2 requests comments on steps the food industry is taking or has taken to reduce the nutrients listed below in the food supply, including what nutrients have been increased as a consequence of reductions where applicable.

  1. Sodium
  2. Added sugars
  3. Fats (i.e., total fats, saturated fats, trans fats, and other individual fatty acids)

When Submitting: Select the “Food industry approaches to reducing sodium, added sugars, and fats” (new topic area) Topic Area and type “Request 2-1” in the comment text box.

SC 3: Diet and Physical Activity Behavior Change
No specific requests at this time.

SC 4: Food and Physical Activity Environments
No specific requests at this time.

SC 5: Food Sustainability and Safety Subcommittee

SC 5 is reviewing and analyzing the current scientific findings regarding food sustainability and food safety as they relate to current and long-term food security. To assist the Subcommittee, it requests comments in the areas below.

Request 5-1 Food Safety - The DGAC continues to invite public comment in the area of food safety.
When Submitting: Select the “Food Safety” Topic Area and type “Request 5-1” in the comment text box.

Request 5-2 Food Systems Sustainability - SC 5 requests public comment regarding a targeted topic on food system sustainability, including comments from both the private and public sectors and addressing local, regional, national, or international scales. Specifically, it seeks approaches and current examples of sustainability in the food system. Comments are encouraged that address:

  1. Elements of a whole food system
  2. Information on specific food groups or commodities
  3. Sustainability metrics that have been implemented or are in development
